Porsche 911 GT3 RS:
The circuit beast
that makes the world dream

A naturally aspirated engine screaming to 9,000 rpm. A rear wing generating 860 kg of downforce. A Nürburgring lap in 6 minutes and 49 seconds. The Porsche 911 GT3 RS is not just a sports car. It is a declaration of war on the ordinary.

Road-legal but built exclusively for the circuit, the Porsche 911 GT3 RS type 992 is today the absolute benchmark among naturally aspirated production cars. Here is why it fascinates the entire world.

01 — History

Born on
the circuit,
made for the road

The Porsche 911 GT3 RS is a story that begins on the racing circuit and ends in your hands, on the road. Since the first generation launched in the early 2000s, each new RS has pushed a little further the limits of what a road-legal car can achieve on a track. Discover our race car brick kits.

The recipe is simple but radical: take the base of the competition 911 GT3, dress it in a widened body to accommodate broader tracks, crown it with an XXL rear wing, and hand it over to a naturally aspirated engine with one single obsession: revs. The result is a car that is road-legal in name only.

The Porsche 911 GT3 RS is a game changer in terms of aerodynamics and chassis. No road car had ever packed this much motorsport technology.

The current version, the 992, is the culmination of twenty years of relentless development. It carries technology straight out of the Porsche cars that race at the 24 Hours of Le Mans: dry-sump lubrication, titanium connecting rods, forged pistons, and an active aerodynamics system that would have seemed like spacecraft engineering just ten years ago.

02 — Engine

The last
great naturally
aspirated engine

At a time when electrification is taking over everything, when turbochargers reign supreme and rev limits are capped at 6,500 rpm in the name of efficiency, the Porsche 911 GT3 RS holds the line. Its 4.0-litre flat-six has no turbo. It does not need one.

525 horsepower. 9,000 revs per minute. A power curve that climbs, climbs, and keeps climbing to a limit most engines never reach. It is brutal, mechanical, pure. Every square centimetre of those titanium connecting rods, every forged piston, every valve tells a story of engineering passion.

Up to 9,000 rpm from a six-cylinder, it is simply fantastic. The sound is a dream and the torque is massive. — Kévin Estre, Porsche works driver

03 — Aerodynamics

860 kg
of downforce.
Active.

What sets the GT3 RS apart from every other 911 is its aerodynamics. Not just a wing bolted on the back for show. A genuine active system, the Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA), which adjusts in real time the downforce generated by the rear wing and the front diffuser.

On the straight, the DRS (Drag Reduction System) reduces drag to maximise top speed. In corners, the wing closes to generate maximum downforce and pin the car to its line. All of it in fractions of a second, automatically, with no input required from the driver.

At maximum speed, the GT3 RS generates 860 kilograms of aerodynamic downforce. Nearly twice its own weight. A number that places this road car in another dimension entirely, that of racing cars that are civil in name only.

04 — Nürburgring

6 minutes
49 seconds
in the green hell

The Nürburgring Nordschleife. 20.8 kilometres. 73 corners. Climbs of 16%, descents of 11%, a narrow track lined with century-old trees. Jackie Stewart called it the Green Hell. And that is where the Porsche 911 GT3 RS wrote its legend.

On 13 October 2022, Jörg Bergmeister, Porsche works driver, takes the wheel of the new GT3 RS type 992. Conditions are far from ideal: a strong headwind on the long Döttinger Höhe straight, track temperatures too low. It does not matter. In 6 minutes and 49.328 seconds, the GT3 RS completes the lap and claims the record for naturally aspirated production cars.

Through the fast corners and on the brakes in particular, the GT3 RS is unbelievably close to our racing car the GT3 R. It is a truly exceptional sensory experience. — Jörg Bergmeister

To put this time in perspective: the GT3 RS type 992 is nearly 7 seconds faster than the previous generation. It also beats a Lamborghini Aventador SVJ with 245 more horsepower. Proof that raw power is not everything, and that aerodynamics, chassis and precision carry far more weight than brute figures on a winding track.

05 — Chassis

A racing car
with a licence plate

As impressive as the GT3 RS engine and aerodynamics are, it is the chassis that makes the real difference at the limit. All suspension bearings are ball-jointed, just like on a race car, for steering precision and driving dynamics that make zero concessions.

The double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear were developed in direct collaboration with Porsche Motorsport engineers. The brakes feature monobloc aluminium 6-piston callipers at the front and 4-piston at the rear. The optional PCCB ceramic brakes take things even further in terms of lightness and heat resistance.

The result is a car that responds to the millimetre, communicates with the driver over every surface change, and gives the sensation of being an extension of the body rather than a machine to operate. That is the true magic of the GT3 RS.

06 — Legacy

More than
a car.
A symbol.

The Porsche 911 GT3 RS is also this: a car that transcends its own definition. It is not simply an object to drive. It is a symbol. Of what automotive engineering can achieve when it refuses every compromise, when it says no to forced hybridisation, no to thermal management at the expense of sensation, no to everything that dilutes the very essence of driving.

The Porsche 911 GT3 RS represents the pursuit of automotive perfection. For enthusiasts, it is far more than a car: it is the embodiment of a philosophy.
